We were engaged as the architect and interior designer for the interior renovation of Miss Carter Cafe, located in Sydney’s Central Business District.
Miss Carter Cafe is nestled on Castlereagh Street in the CBD in a building that was once a tobacco warehouse, and repurposed for apartment and office units in the 80s. With only the front facade of the building remaining and a high rise building raised above, the cafe encapsulates a historic charm with touches of nostalgia. Miss Carter Cafe features an inviting outdoor seating area facing the lively street, and beautiful gold leaf signage on the glass frontage by a local artist.
Upon entry, customers are greeted by a beautiful coffee machine that shines brilliantly under the statement brass pendant light from Australian furniture brand Jardan. A bespoke velvet banquette is a nod to the client’s Greek heritage, featuring a soft blue velvet that complements the adjacent blue-and-white tiling. Huset tables and Thonet chairs accompany the banquette booths, while Italian black and gold marble countertops and additional Art Deco and Parisian bistro-inspired elements lending a familiar, yet elevated, touch to the cafe.
We collaborated with local designer Stu Torkington of Tork Design to design all the graphics incorporated throughout the project. Another element included in the design of the space was Wonder Woman, or Miss Carter – the cafe’s namesake, and a personal hero for the client.
