One of the last, original weatherboard cottages in this beachside locale has been transformed into a multi-generational family beachside pad. The clients, a couple with adult children, wanted to create a family holiday home that their children and grandchildren, who live overseas, could return to to create beautiful family memories. Inspired by the clients own childhood beach shack the desire was to maintain the quaint and nostalgic cottage to the front whilst opening the home to a private sanctuary at the rear. The house also had to function to allow three separate living zones for the now various sub-family groups. With young children in the mix, the house also had to be quiet. The lower level maintains original bedrooms to the front of the house which creates one “apartment” and then an upper level was added to create another family accomodation. A self-contained studio to the rear of the site provides another separate family space. A large, communal living space with raked ceiling opens to an outdoor dining space which leads up to the tropical landscaped garden and pool. The house was not without its challenges like a three storey apartment building and grocery store loading dock to the rear of the site and the advantageous sun aspect being to the front of the house whilst needing to capture sun to the rear. The house harvests rains water for reuse on site and has solar panels.
